Cancer-fighting beer!

Apparently researchers are devising ways
to treat patients or the average joe by genetically
modifying yeast which could then be used in the
brewing process.

This goes out to you Dave.

The Food Issue

A "letter to the president" published in the New York Times by Michael Pollan. This article is long but very worth reading. It details everything that is wrong with our agricultural system and offers solutions.

a hopeful doomsday video!

Wake Up, Freak Out - then Get a Grip from Leo Murray on Vimeo.

This video was created by students at RCA. It's a very relevant and intelligent analysis of scientists new understanding of global warming. Plus, who doesn't love stick people animation?

DaveDave Brewing

If you don't know I'm into brewing, then you're living under a rock right now. Literally.

Anyhow, since we'll be using this for Capstone ideas/collaboration as well, I thought I'd post a link to my beer brewing blog, as my Capstone will relate directly to the home brewer (or aspiring home brewer), and the experience they have through the process. The blog is typically to talk about what is being brewed, beer inspiration and otherwise, but if anyone wanted to check it out, as follows:

The Future of Gaming?

Taking what Spore recognized and harnessed, user-created content, even further.

The graphics may seem rudimentary - yes, but the main attraction is how it makes basic video-game programming into a SimCity like set-up.

This goes beyond customizing buildings, or creatures, or objects in one's video game; This is about creating the actual gameplay.

The implications are big. Kids would be creating their own video-games - challenging and trying to outdo each other. This could even perhaps be a fresh new way to present one's portfolio.

Worth a watch.

3d sketching

ILoveSketch from Seok-Hyung Bae on Vimeo.
Thought this was a pretty intriguing program. It is a 3d modeling interface which you can sketch the defining curves by hand (on a cintiq).

The video is a bit dry, but the featured program is sweet. The user seems to be able to work pretty fast, and the interface runs smoothly...

Beer Filled USB Stick

In the first of what looks to be many of posts regarding beer+design, here is something interesting I have found:

Although I'm not so sure the usefulness of this find of thing, and I CERTAINLY do agree with the fact that it is Busweiser on the USB key, but regardless... interesting.

Coffee Fanatics

Ok last thing about Seattle, I promise.

This is for all the coffee lovers out there! The original Starbucks...and the inside that is always jam packed! The crowd was kind of ridiculous...with all the coffee and the Starbucks on every corner of every street in the entire city, I don't know when this city sleeps!

Utilikilts - so not a joke!

During my fabulous stay in Seattle early this fall, I noticed a trend while walking around downtown. More so than not, men were wearing these "utilikilts." Everyone raved about them...and by the end of my stay, I thought it was abnormal when guys were wearing pants! (ok...maybe not, but almost!)

check them out!

Utilikilts Rock!

YOU'RE FAT!!

This was too good not to post. Quite the viral commentary piece. I think we need more of this rather than designing loop holes for people...lets challenge each other to be better than we are.

Let's Zag

Tonight was awesome. We got together as a studio and brainstormed our ideas for our Senior Capstone projects in a Pecha Kucha style forum on the lawn of DAAP (I will post pictures here tomorrow). Many people got great feedback and a laundry list of ideas. But how do you now select the best possible project? It's the classic case of which does not belong here (See picture below and to the left): Some people might say the violin does not belong because it's body is made of wood and not metal like the other three. Others could say the car does not belong because it is the only non-instrument.

Many answers are good, but only one is best. So how do you choose? One way is to think about selecting the most interesting project, might be to develop a set of metrics to compare the ideas. Marty Neumeier offers a suggestion in his book, Zag. (The book Zag describes brand strategy to making the best possible brands. The title alludes to the idea that when other people are zigging you should be zagging- making your brand both better and different). Zag offers a metrics that asks you consider whether your idea is both good and different- the best being the upper right of both good and differnt (see below). Maybe this will help in making your decisions.
